Japanese last names ending in -guchi / -kuchi

The kanji 口 means mouth, entrance. At the end of a surname it is read guchi or kuchi, depending on the sound before it. Like most Japanese surnames, names ending in it describe where a family lived. Yamaguchi (山口) is 山 mountain + 口 mouth; Noguchi (野口) is 野 field + 口 mouth; Taniguchi (谷口) is 谷 valley + 口 mouth.
