The kanji 田 means rice field. At the end of a surname it is read da or ta, depending on the sound before it. Like most Japanese surnames, names ending in it describe where a family lived. Yoshida (吉田) is 吉 good luck + 田 rice field; Yamada (山田) is 山 mountain + 田 rice field; Ikeda (池田) is 池 pond + 田 rice field.
