Japanese dog names

The names dogs in Japan really have, what they mean, and why so many of them are foods.

Ask a Japanese dog owner for their dog's name and you will very likely hear a food. Mugi (barley) has topped recent rankings, followed by drinks and sweets such as Latte, Mocha and Cocoa. Most of these are shades of brown, so the name describes the coat at the same time.

Japanese owners also tend to avoid human names for pets, which can feel too serious. For a Shiba Inu, a Japanese food word like Komugi, Azuki or Mugi is the favourite; for toy poodles and Chihuahuas, café drinks lead.
